| | COLORBOND STEEL AWARD HMAS Harman – DNOC, Daryl Jackson Alastair Swayn Architects
| JURY CITATION |
The new Defence Network Operations Centre
on HMAS Harman is an 80-metre-long,
essentially windowless building operating in
high security and partly hidden by sloping
land. It could have been a monstrous
imposition on the landscape, but instead the
use of Colorbond on both roof and walls,
with a tapered form and muted palette, is
cost-effective and elegant. The building’s
profile terminates in thin elements which
appear to hover above the ground plane,
providing a delicacy belying its scale. Elevations alternate between horizontal and
vertical panels. These give it a sensitivity to
the surrounding landscape by harmonious
opposition, something not normally seen
in such a pragmatic military building.
