 The National Museum of Australia by Ashton Raggatt McDougall and Robert Peck von Hartel Threthowan has won Blueprint's Architecture Award for Best New Public Building of the Year. Juror Charles Jencks described the project as an "exuberant celebration of diversity and an acknowledgement of tragedy". Jones Coulter Young's Science and Health Building at Edith Cowan University was also a finalist  The Architectural Review's November cover star is the Karijini Visitor Centre, by Woodhead International BDH   Woodhead Wilson has won the Austrade-Austcham Export Award for their work in Singapore  Students from UTasmania have once again succeeded in the international Graphisoft competition. The team of Bob Wong, Susanne Oeltjen and Swee Wei Lee were awarded third prize and Alisa Ward was awarded an honourable mention in the open competition



National
 Professor Jennifer Taylor received the RAIA's inaugural Education Prize, presented at the National Awards in Canberra  The 2001 RAIA Student Prize for the Advancement of Architecture went to Chris Brisbin from UQueensland  The Peter MacCallum Practice Prize was won by Andrew O'Donnell from the QUT  Graham Scott-Bohana is leaving his position as RAIA national manager, practice, to take a new position as managing director, projects at Canberra's National Capital Authority  The Royal Australian Planning Institute has dropped the "royal" and will now be known as the Planning Institute of Australia  Australian Bureau of Statistics figures released last December show that building approvals granted across the country have increased 56.2% since October 2000



New South Wales
 Geoffrey Adams is the RAIA NSW Chapter's new state manager   Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority's revitalisation of Dawes Point Park received two awards for at the RAPI Awards   The New South Wales Board of Architects have awarded six Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarships, three to registered architects Peter Myers, Colin James and Matthew Chan, and three to students Adriano Pupillo (USydney), Jennifer Phelan (UNewcastle) and Simon Swain (UTS). The major award is to Myers to help turn his writings on the "third city" into a book   The Premier has launched the Residential Flat Design Pattern Book. Developed by the Urban Design Advisory Service and the NSW Government Architect's Office, it includes case studies and design principles for good apartment design   Tracings: Woolloomooloo to Walsh Bay, an exhibition of drawings by Belinda Ward showed at A ¨C Space on Cleveland   SydneyCentral, the winner of the Parramatta Road competition, by Choi Ropiha, McGregor+Partners and Stanisic Associates is on display at the Customs House until February   Newcastle hosted the National Urban Design Forum, focussing on the redevelopment of historic inner city regions last November, with Philip Adams's Hunter Lecture particularly well received   Sydney's inner city council boundaries have changed. The City of Sydney is now responsible for Woolloomooloo, Kings Cross, Potts Point, Rushcutters Bay, Elizabeth Bay, Darlinghurst, Chippendale, the University of Sydney, the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Glebe and Forest Lodge   Michael Nash is now CEO of DesignInc Sydney, leaving former CEO Richard Dinham to focus on the national development of DesignInc Ltd   Susan Playford has been appointed manager of the NSW office of PDT Architects, the rebranded Powell Dods and Thorpe   The Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority will undertake a masterplan for the the Sydney Fish Market, in association with the market   Altair, designed by Engelen Moore, has won Australand the High Density Project of the Year Award at HIA Housing Awards   NSW Government Architect Chris Johnson has been appointed by Parramatta City Council to prepare a master plan for the city's Civic Centre site. Johnson has also been appointed by Sydney Water to design a 30,000 m2 office building within the same precinct   Bob Nation has left Nation Fender Katsalidis and will join Greg Crone to form Crone Nation  Lindsay Johnston and Bob Donaldson are both retiring from UNewcastle, but will remain closely associated with the School of Architecture as conjoint staff   Chris Landorf has been appointed to UNewcastle as senior lecturer and Steven Fleming as lecturer   Sydney's Green Square competition, judged by Netherlands Government Architect Jo Coenen, Mick Keniger and Chris Johnson, has been won by the collaborative team of Weil Arets, Turner + Associates, McGregor + Partners, Holos Consulting. Two teams received high commendations: Alsop Architects, SJB Architects and Urbis; and T.R. Hamzah & Yeang and Jackson Teece Chesterman Willis  Jo Coenen also spoke publicly about the Dutch government's initiatives in public architecture, residential flats and environmental design and showed some of his own recent work   David Nelson from Norman Foster's office has presented the design of a new office building to the Central Sydney Planning Committee. Incorporating advanced ESD principals, the project is being undertaken in conjunction with Ken Maher of Hassell   The Department of Urban Affairs and Planning has changed its name to planningNSW   Adrian Boddy has retired from UTS. Colleagues friends and students made postcards as a visual tribute at his farewell party last December   Earle Arney has been appointed as a partner at Woods Bagot   Dr Tim Flannery will give the National Trust Heritage Lecture on 23 April   Naomi Stead has been appointed as an associate lecturer at UTS   The Pier 8/9 redevelopment in Walsh Bay won the Urban Renewal and NSW President's Awards at the Urban Development Institute of Australia NSW Awards for Excellence   Elizabeth Farrelly has won the Pascall Prize for her architectural journalism   Jahn Associates have been commissioned by Waverly Council to develop the design of the proposed $140 million Bondi Junction upgrade



Australian Capital Territory
 Reconciliation Place was completed in December last year, however the installation of the slivers has been delayed until the new year. The Australian reports that the project struck problems over the "separation sliver", depicting images of apparently happy children at play, in foster homes and at school. Aden Ridgeway called for a boycott of the project, claiming that the Howard government is trying to reinvent history

 The Inverloch Summer Architecture Series is running again on January 17 and 24 at the Anglers Club, Inverloch   RMIT University has awarded Joe Rollo with an honorary masters degree for his work in architectural journalism   Dianne Peacock's installation "Subplot" used light and water to transform a subway at Spencer Street Station. Part of the Platform Artists Group initiative, the project also received funding from the City of Melbourne   Bates Smart has promoted Roger Chapman, Alex Haynes and Georgie Tregear to associate director, and Tim Hungerford, Jacqui Lomas, Mary Noonan, Shaun Schroter and Luisa Watson to associate   Maria McCarthy has reestablished her lighting consultancy in Melbourne   Seamus McCartney, of UMelbourne won the Gold Treasury Museum's student competition for the design of a Museum of Paper. Mark Raggatt and Keith Tan, of RMIT, shared second place   Gregory Burgess Architects has won the Heritage Property Award for the Catholic Theological College   The Greater City of Geelong has sponsored Bilbao: the Transformation of a City, showing at the National Wool Museum until April 12   The National Trust (Vic) has established an advisory centre to assist the public with restoration advice   The CSIRO ran a forum, "Buildings Reinvented: Designing a Smarter Innovative Future", in late November   Andrew Andersons' extensions to the Ballarat Art Gallery opened in November last year   The RAIA Vic Chapter once again closed the year with Small, an exhibition of work from new, young Melbourne practices   Lend Lease has released their "new identity" for the Victoria Harbour development on Melbourne's Docklands. John Wardle has been appointed as the architect of the first residential development   Alison Hopper, of Bates Smart, won an Arup Award for Outstanding Achievement in Design for her work on the Gymnastics Victoria/National Institute of Circus Arts Building at the National Association of Women in Construction Awards   November saw the Melbourne component of Tramjatra, a collaborative project between artists and tramways communities of Melbourne and Kolkata. Curated by Michael Douglas, it included an installation by James Legge of Six Degrees   Leighton Properties and Folkestone have announced plans for 700 Collins Street, an office development to be built on the extended Collins Street in the Batmans Hill Dockland precinct. It will be designed by Bligh Voller Nield and Peddle Thorp



Northern Territory
 The Architects Studio are designing a house for the remote community of Corella Creek, 400km from Tennant Creek, in the middle of the Barkly Tablelands  The Darwin City Council has received heritage grant from the Commonwealth to undertake urgent conservation works to the military installations at East Point. The Architects Studio are the project's heritage and conservation architects



Queensland

 Film maker Denis Tupicoff is making a documentary about the two houses Rex Addison designed for his family in Taringa, Brisbane. This will be interwoven with stories from Susan Addison's book Motherlode   Shortlisted architects for the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art are: Architectus and Davenport Campbell & Partners; Benson and Forsyth and Peddle Thorp; Durbach Block and Bligh Voller Nield; LAB Architecture Studio with B+N Group and Bligh Voller Nield; Massimiliano Fuksas Architetto and Hassell. The successful architect will be announced early this year   Scott Burrows has been appointed project director at Woods Bagot   The Urban Design Alliance and the Brisbane Development Association have joined forces to organise a urban design workshop dealing with Northbank early this year. Opposite Southbank, between the William Jolly and the Captain Cook bridges, this is one of Brisbane's biggest brownfield sites. When we went to press, the proposed design team leaders were Ken Maher, John Hockings, Geoff Walker and Bill Corker   Andrew Wilson has been appointed as a lecturer at QUT   Max Horner has retired from UQ   John Stenton has been appointed as a partner at Woods Bagot   The Southbank masterplan has won the Humphrey Reynolds Perkins Urban Design Award at the RAPI Qld Awards. The Housing Award went to an affordable housing project at Bowen Hills by the Department of Housing, Gall & Medek Architects and Deicke Richards Architects. The Urban Planning Achievement Award went to the Department of Housing, QUT, Hassell and the Department of Public Works for the Kelvin Grove Urban Village



South Australia
 The Marion Cultural Centre, by Ashton Raggatt McDougall in association with Phillips/Pilkington opened in late November  Following their refurbishment of the Adelaide Festival Centre interior, Woods Bagot are now redeveloping the external plaza and festival drive  Jackman Gooden celebrated its 150th anniversary in October last year  Woods Bagot are designing the Australian Science and Mathematics School. The senior secondary school is a joint project between the Department for Education Training and Employment and Flinders University  Flightpath Architects are working on a new Business Enterprise Centre at Smithfield  Hassell are working on a $10M office building for Glenmont in Glenhill Road, one of the first large office buildings to go ahead in SA for some time



Western Australia
 The "Your Kinda House" competition, organised by the Goldfields Esperance Development Commission, has announced the following winners. Kalgoorlie-Boulder was won by Fiona Hogg of Troppo Architects, with a commendation to George Nunn and special mention for Adrian Iredale of Iredale Pedersen Hook. Esperance Precinct was won by Christopher James, with a commendation for Fiona Hogg and special mention to Kate Hislop, UWA. Rural and Remote Zone was won by Christopher James with a special mention for Finn Pederson of Iredale Pedersen Hook   The RAIA WA Chapter is running "Working with an Architect", a series of public lectures at local council civic centres   Curtin University sent groups of architecture students to Turkey and to Kuala Lumpur at the end of last year   Greg Cowan spoke on ABC Radio National's "The Comfort Zone" in December, promoting the architectural significance of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy   Cox Howlett + Bailey Woodland's new convention and exhibition centre has finally commenced construction on the Perth foreshore   The new Dental Hospital by Hames Sharley on the QE II Medical Centre campus has opened   The Minister for Housing Tom Stephens's suggestion that more public housing should be located in Perth's exclusive western suburbs has lead to an outcry from residents and has resulted in clauses in new housing development contracts that prevent HomesWest, the public housing commission, from buying land   DCM's Melville Aquatic Centre is currently under construction   The Government Taskforce, chaired by John Hyde, has announced that the proposed "security of payment" legislation will include architectural and engineering consultants   Max Hipkins, director of planning for the City of Perth, has invited comments on six scenarios for the city's future development as part of a structured approach to developing a strategic plan   Donaldson + Warn have been appointed to undertake a study of the old Land Titles Building in Perth's "heritage precinct"   After analysing 20,000 crimes, the Australian Institute of Criminology has backed Gosnells City Council research which demonstrated that houses on interconnected streets in a traditional grid pattern have lower crime rates than those in cul-de-sacs   The extensions to the Burswood resort by Silver Thomas Hanley and Ancher Mortlock and Woolley were progressively opened between Christmas and New Year   Curtin's School of Architecture, Construction and Planning has "digested" recent comments about the Perth Urban Forum and say that constructive criticism will be incorporated into the next architectural forum they held   John Pidgeon has received the annual WA Heritage Award for an individual



Tasmania
 Jacob Allom Wade have submitted plans to the Hobart City Council for a $15M redevelopment of the Pacific Vista Hotel into a five star health spa resort overlooking Hobart  Dr Zed Brombarek and Justin Beall have been appointed to the UniTas School of Architecture  Work is underway on a new book on twentieth century Tasmanian architecture. The book is being written by Barry McNeill, with photography by Leigh Woolley and design by Lynda Warner   Following the success of the Tahune Airwalk the same design team - Jacob Allom Wade and Thomson Brett Engineers - have been short-listed for the Wooroonooran Canopy Walkway and Visitor Centre to be constructed south of Cairns
